Corporal Levi wandered slowly in front of the table at which his comrades were sitting, pretending to be very busy reading the case report. He lifted his eyes, looked around, stopping his eyes on Eren for a little too long than it was necessary, and came back to lecture. After another few minutes he murmured something to himself, lifted his head and put the papers back on the table.
Eren knew he probably should listen, but he just couldn't focus. Now that almost all titans were gone what could the mission be about? Probably nothing really important. Instead of listening he started to look around sloppily, not even paying attention to Corporal's words. He's been in Survey Corps for three years by now, yet he realized that he had never paid closer attention to the looks of the meeting room.
The walls were dark gray, one could say dusty, buy that couldn't possibly be true, because one of main Commanders was a total cleaning freak and he wouldn't even allow for it to happen. The table they were sitting by was huge, almost filling the whole room, leaving only some empty place by the right side of the room, and approximately 1,5 meter to every wall, for people to walk by without a problem. When he looked up at the ceiling, he saw an old, dangling chandelier, and wondered how much more time would have to pass for it to fall down, since it looked like nobody took care of it for years.
After what seemed like hours Eren realized that it suddenly got pretty quiet. He lifted his head to see everyone: Erwin, Hanji, Jean, Mikasa, Armin and most importantly - Corporal Levi looking at him. He attempted to smile shyly, yet he knew that it was not going to end well for him. Eren knew that Heichou liked him, maybe even enough for Eren not to get in trouble for not paying attention. He knew also that even though Levi liked him, he was still going to get yelled at now, because everyone was looking at them and Levi couldn't just simply allow himself to show any soft spots for anyone.
"Yeager" Corporal's words made everyone else in the room turn their heads away from Eren to him. Levi sighed loudly. "Pay attention."
Eren rolled his eyes and nodded. "Yeah, sure"
"And after the meeting," Levi ran his hand through his silky black hair. "I want to see you in my office" Eren gulped. He did't expect it to end like this. He liked Levi, indeed, some might think that he felt even more, but the short man was still scary, and Eren had to admit that he was terrified what the Corporal wanted to do.
"Of course, Corporal"
*****
During the rest of the meeting Eren decided to play it cool. What could possibly Levi do? Beat him up? Even if so, he wasn't scared of that. What was the most scary for him was just the thought of being with Heichou alone in a closed space.
Since he was just a kid, Eren admired Levi for his work and abilities, and looked up to him as a mentor. He wanted to enlist to Survey Corp in the future, and help people, alongside Levi and others. But recently his feeling for Levi grew to be something much more than just admiration. He was scared to admit it, even to himself, but since the last mission when they both got to fight titans alongside each other, and since Eren saw Levi's quick, majestic, and blameless fighting movements, he started having a massive crush on the Corporal.
And now, he wanted to subtly check if this feeling flows both ways.
He pulled himself together, took few deep breaths and entered Corporal's office.
Ackerman was sitting comfortably on a sofa by his desk, reading some reports, but when he saw Eren, he laid them back on the desk. "Yeager," he greeted him softly.
"Levi," he answered, and he saw his comrade's brows furrow.
"Corporal Levi for you, Yeager." His voice sounded a little rough now, Eren knew he was slowly getting angry.
"I have a name you know?" he snickered. "How would you feel if I kept calling you Ackerman?" He leaned on the bookshelf, opposite to Levi, who seemed to start blushing.
"Know your place, Eren, you're talking to your corporal!"
"See? You can remember it, it's not hard, huh?" Eren grinned, knowing that he's bringing Levi to madness.
"What's your damn problem, kid?" He stood up from the couch and walked few steps closer to the green-eyed. Eren gulped. He didn't think it through and didn't think that he would lose all of his sarcasm and confidence once Levi's is standing so close.
"You - you're the one who wanted to see me, remember?" He tried to play it as cool as he could, but he felt that with every step corporal took closer to him, he was becoming more and more distracted. Because how can you stay focused when you have such a handsome face right in front of you?
Levi took few more steps, closing the distance between him and Eren to barely a meter. "What now, kid? Have you lost all of your courage?" He laughed shortly. Eren had never heard him laugh before, and oh, what a sweet and pure sound it was. He closed his eyes for a second, and when he opened them, Levi was glaring right back. "Tell me - why are you doing this?" His voice suddenly got softer, like he was concerned about Eren.
"Wha- what? Why am I doing what?"
"This." He gestured at Eren. "Acting like you're so though and confident, ignoring everything and everyone at military meetings, and then being completely pensive and absent-minded at the missions outside the wall." He tilted his head slightly, which didn't help at all, it just made Eren even more distracted, because this way he looked like a cute confused puppy. His silvery steel eyes were sparkling with intere "Is something going on?"
"I-" Eren ran his hands through his hair and sighed. Should he tell Levi what really is going on? He knew it would be hard for him to keep it hidden when they had to see and talk with each other on daily basis. "It's hard for me to talk about it" he lowered his head, looking at his toes, trying his best to avoid Levi's eyes.
He never really felt very self-confident, and talking about emotions was never his thing, so why did he think that coming here and trying to take this as an opportunity to talk about his feelings with Levi was a good idea? Especially when he knew what being near his crush did. For a while now, every time Levi stood less than 1 meter from Eren, or tried to talk with him about anything else than work, Eren was losing his mind. He was unable to think clearly, his vision was getting blurry, and any attempt of voicing his thoughts ended with stuttering like a child or not even being able to squeeze a word out. Everyone had probably noticed it by now, but he hadn't heard anyone talk about it, so either they were hiding it very well or they had no idea why Eren was acting this way. Personally he would've loved the second option to be true. He didn't even wanted to imagine what would others think about him if they'd learn that he, stupid brat Eren Yeager, has a crush on a famous Corporal Levi.
Thinking about that, he felt ashamed, and felt warmth crawling up his cheeks. To make it worse it seemed that his eyes started getting watery, as if he was about to cry. Levi must've noticed that, because he lifted Eren's chin and made him look up.
"Eren, is everything okay?" His low voice was soft, you could tell that he was concerned.
"I'm fine," He jerked his chin out of Levi's grasp and wiped his eyes with a back of his hand. He was surprised by the fact that his voice didn't even tremble, even though he was on the verge of crying. Levi nodded softly. Then he paced to the door, shut it, and locked it. "Wha- what are you doing?" Having locked the door, he turned around and came back to Yeager. He took his hand without hesitation, dragged him over to the couch and sat him down. Eren was scared of what was about to happen next, but gray-eyed just sat next to him.
"Talk to me." Levi demanded, but his usual husky voice was now calming and supporting. "Something IS going on, I can see it, and I won't let you out this office until you tell me what it is."
"I- I don't know if I'm ready to talk about this yet." His voice came out wobbly, as if he was going to cry, and it did not escape Levi's notice. Shivers ran down Eren's spine when he felt that Levi's hand gripped his own. He looked up to see Heichou gazing back with a soft smile.
"You can trust me, Eren. Believe me. It will be way easier for you if you talk about your problems with someone else instead of bottling it all inside"
"Well... You see..." he hesitated for a second. Was he sure about it? He wasn't. But he decided to do it anyway. "The thing is that..." he laughed nervously. "You- you are going on... And it's driving me nuts." He smiled faintly, not knowing what to say anymore, waiting for Ackerman's reaction. No matter how many times he had imagined this conversation in his head, he had never thought it was going to look like this. Not even in the worst imagined scenarios he thought Levi would react like this.
What he did was let go of Eren's hand, turned his soft smile into a grimace of offence, and stood up from the couch. "Excuse me?" he snorted. "I wanted to help you and you're saying stuff like this? You know, if you wanted to tell me that you dislike me that much as your Corporal, and that I'm "driving you nuts" than maybe you should've enlisted to the Military Police, huh?"
"I never said I dislike you," he whispered. "I don't think you understood what I meant" Eren started to blush, and with every moment he felt his cheeks get warmer and probably more red.
"Then what it is, you brat?" Levi's voice was back to normal, husky, low, and on the verge of screaming.
"I - I like you... A lot" He looked down on his shaky hands. His voice was now barely audible, he was taking more to himself than to Levi. "Probably even more than it is acceptable for a kid like me"
It took Levi more than few seconds to realize. Then he sat down slowly. "Oh..." He didn't even look at Eren, scratching his neck in a nervous gesture. For a couple of minutes neither of them spoke a single word. The silence was only occasionally interrupted by rhythmical ticking of the clock. "You know..." Levi was the first one to break the silence. "I- I have think about what you've just said. Preferably alone"
"I- " Eren scoffed. "I just told you that I have a massive crush on you and you're telling me that you're the one that has to think about it?" He couldn't help but laugh. It was so fucked up. "Not only you make me reveal my secret when I'm not sure if I want you to know yet, but you also
are making me feel like a stupid kid by saying that you have to think about it" Eren's voice stopped shaking. He was confident now. He was angry. At Levi, for making him tell this, and at himself for not resisting enough. He took a deep breath, exhaled it slowly and looked at Levi. He was sitting there, not moving at all, not even looking at Eren. "You could at least say something"
"What do you expect me to say? That it's so amazing you feel that way and I've been waiting for you to tell me this, so I could say that I love you too? And that we could be a sweet nice couple? It won't work like that, kid. And I'm not sure if you've noticed that, but you're way younger than me. Don't expect me to immediately jump into your arms just because you said that you like me. Besides, you're just a kid. You don't know what's good for you yet, and it's definitely not me. I'm a corporal, I have my own stuff to take care of, and I definitely don't need another kid to look after." Eren couldn't take that anymore.
"And since when you're so good at knowing what's best for me!? You know nothing about me. And stop treating me like I'm 10, I'm not a kid anymore, and you're not my father, so don't act like you are!"
"I'm almost twice your age, and it's basically like I could be your father, so don't act like you're so smart, brat!"
"You're not twice my age! 10 years older is not twice my age, so don't act like you're better than me, only because you're older, alright? I'm fully aware of the fact that you're 28, and I'm 18, but that doesn't give you an advantage over me!"
"Yes, I am the older one, and when I give you advices, you should be thankful that I even want to talk to you! I'm still your Corporal, in case your didn't remember!"
"Oh four fucks sake, stop bringing up the same shit, 'I'm older', 'I'm your corporal', 'you should listen to me', I'm sick of it! For once you could listen to others opinion, then you'd known that you're not as amazing and skilled as you think you are! Invincible lance corporal Levi Ackerman - so praised by everyone, even though he couldn't protect his own friends and comrades from getting eaten by titans. You're pathetic, you know?" Eren stopped thinking about his words, and was saying everything that came to his mind, not minding if it could hurt or annoy Levi. At this point he didn't care, he just wanted to let all of his bottled up feelings outside.
Levi moved quickly and grabbed Eren by the collar of his shirt. "You better stop it, you ungrateful brat! When I listen to what you're saying I'm certain that I should never have even consider stopping the Military Police from killing you!" Eren expression changed from angry to hurt, and Levi realized what he had just said. He let go of the collar and backed up. "Eren, I-"
"I'm done with you" Eren stood up and paced to the door. Levi followed him and grabbed him by his wrist to stop him.
"Wait, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-" he squeezed his hand harder and pulled him back a little.
"Get off me!" Eren hissed and tried to get his hand out of Levi's grip. He unwillingly started to cry. He looked into Levi's eyes. "Choosing you as my mentor was probably the worst decision of my whole life." A single tear made its way down his cheek. "All you can do is hurt people, leaving them alone with their pain. Now let me go. I don't want to be here anymore." The grip on his hand loosened, so he jerked his hand back and went out the door, leaving Levi alone only with his thoughts and the annoying ticking clock.
*****
It's already been two weeks since the unfortunate fight between Eren and Levi, and since that time, they've been successfully avoiding each other, and talking only when it was really necessary. What Eren thought would bring them closer together, had only made them separate and made them talk even less than before.
Their behavior was definitely the topic of many conversations between cadets, and the rumors were probably spreading like a plague.
'Is something going on between these two?'
'I don't know, I've heard some shady rumors that Eren has told Levi that he's in love with him, and that's why Levi is so pissed'
'Are you dumb or are you just pretending? Why would Eren tell him such things? And even if he would, it's like having a death wish, I don't think Eren would be that stupid. I'm sure it has to do something with military issues, maybe they've just got in a fight on a mission or something like this.'
Everyone was making up their theories, yet no one really knew what was going on, because both Levi and Eren refused to talk about this. Which made them both walk around all sulky and rancorous, refusing to talk to anyone, not even only themselves.
The one person who has been silently looking at all this masquerade and wishing for it to end as quick as it's possible was Hanji. She realized something was going on even before the unfortunate fight. She noticed how Eren's attitude towards Levi changed, and by studying his behavior she easily deduced that he must've developed some kind of feelings towards Levi. And seeing that now, after their meeting they're both acting like they don't even know each other, she put two and two together, assuming that something had to happen. And that 'something' could either be Eren telling Levi about his feelings and Levi totally dumping him, or Levi saying that he needs time to think about it, when Eren expected a specific answer. Regardless of what happened, it resulted with boys sulking at each other and Hanji knew she was the one that had to take care of it.
She stood up from her table and walked over to Levi's. Eren and Levi were sitting by the same table, reluctantly eating breakfast that consisted of burned eggs and rubbery bacon. She found it kinda cute that even though they both were angry and sulky, they refused to change tables and still were sitting next to each other at every meal.
"You two." Her sudden voice made them lift their heads and look at the unwanted interrupter. "You're going with me."
"Umm, can't you see I'm eating?" Levi sassed. He purposely said 'I' instead of 'we', pretending that Eren wasn't there. It did not escape Eren's notice, but he decided to ignore it and remain silent. Nothing good would come out of another fight, especially that now they weren't alone, and the whole garrison would hear them.
"Do I look like I give a fuck about this?" Hanji did look solemn. Solemn, angry and annoyed. "I don't. Now get your asses up, don't make a scene, cause everybody is looking at you anyway, and come with me."
"What for?" Eren blurted.
"Shut up, brat." Levi hissed. "It doesn't matter what for, get your sorry ass up and follow Hanji wherever the fuck she wants to go." Eren muttered some curse words under his breath, but he did what Levi said and stood up.
Hanji left them behind, and scurried towards the hallway, without turning back. She knew that Levi would follow, he's not stupid, he knows that when Hanji is mad, defying her is like having a death wish. And if Levi would follow, so would Eren.
She lead them through winding underground hallways, and after a while stopped in front of the meeting room. "We're going in, I need to talk to you both."
"Couldn't we do it back there?" Eren yawned. He didn't feel like walking around just to talk with Hanji, especially when it also included Levi.
"NO, we could not." Hanji snapped, and opened the door with a key. She stopped in the door jamb, waiting for boys to walk in. They entered the room grudgingly. Hanji smiled broadly. "Well, now... Boys, I'm going to leave and you're going to stay here." She said and quickly shut the door. "I won't let you out unless you two are talking again without death glares and sulking!" She shouted trough the door, and pranced away, leaving them closed in the room. It happened so fast that none of them even had a chance to react.
"What now?" Eren asked himself. He couldn't be with Levi in a closed space. They weren't even standing close to each other, yet Eren could feel Levi's presence, and felt extremely awkward and uncomfortable with it.
"Nothing. We wait until she gets back."
"Or I could just-" Eren lifted his hand to his mouth, ready to shift into a titan. Levi noticed that, quickly approached Eren, and caught him by his wrist, stopping him from what he meant to do.
"Take it easy, brat," Levi scolded him. "You don't want to destroy the whole underground level, do you?"
Eren took his hand away from his mouth. "No. I don't"
"She surely did it on purpose" he mumbled, staring blankly at the wall. "When we last talked, in my office, you said..." He hesitated for a while, but he shook it off almost immediately. "You said that you liked me for a while now. She must've noticed that, she's a superb observant. And now, after that conversation, she should've noticed that things got a little bitter between us and that we were avoiding each other for this couple days. She just probably wanted us to sort things out."
"By closing us alone in an empty room?"
Levi turned his head around and looked at Eren. Then he shrugged. "I don't know. But it seems to be working."
"What!?"
"We're talking again, aren't we?"
"Theoretically," he grunted.
Levi might've been the one that spoke first and tried to initiate some apologies but Eren didn't plan on getting along with him. Not yet. Levi's words from last fight still hurt him and he kept hearing them in his head, like ghosts. 'you're just a kid', 'i shouldn't even have considered stopping them from killing you'. Having your mentor tell you that he would rather want you dead than having to put up with you is like getting a shot in your chest. And that's how Eren felt. Wounded and hurt. He didn't want to make the same mistake again and talk about his problems, because this time he could end up with not only his feelings shattered, but maybe even his heart broken to pieces.
He walked across the room, leaned on the wall, and then slid down to the floor. Levi hesitated for a moment, but he followed Eren and sat down a little farther.
"Eren, I-" Levi's voice sounded weird, like he was hurt too. This caught Eren's attention, but he still didn't bother to look at the grey-eyed. "I wanted to say I'm sorry. Truly. Back then we were fighting and I stopped thinking what I was saying, I didn't mean it. I don't regret saving you from the Military Police, you should know this." He sighed. "You know... If I had to relive that day once again, I wouldn't even hesitate, I'd do the same thing I did before." Eren felt his shattered feelings being slowly put together. However he decided to keep on sulking to see how far could the corporal go in his apologies.
Levi peeked at his companion, but he wouldn't look back, staring intensively at his shoes. Levi did not lie about the apologies. He wouldn't lie. He couldn't lie. Not to Eren. He knew very well that he had hurt this kid and that he should apologize, and he really meant it when he said he's sorry. And he found it hard to admit, but he felt somewhat empty when Eren refused to talk to him, and didn't even bother to take a quick glance at his interlocutor. Could it be that he started developing some feelings towards this boy?
"Could you say something? Anything? At least look at me, please, I want you to understand that I'm truly sorry." Eren raised his head slowly and locked his eyes on Levi. He pretended to still be angry, but deep inside he didn't want to fight with him. "All right then." Levi nodded slowly. "I get it."
Eren might've been mistaken, but he thought that he just saw a tear run down Levi's cheek. When he looked more closely, it indeed seemed like he was crying. "Levi-" he heard quiet, barely audible sobbing coming from his right. He never saw Levi cry. He never even thought Levi was capable of crying. He seemed like he was invincible, emotionless, that nothing was able to stop him. Yet it turned out that he still was human too.
A random thought came to Eren's mind. What he wanted to do was like having a death wish, but he still wanted to try. What he did was get closer to Heichou and carefully lean his head on his shoulder, hugging him gently. Surprisingly Levi didn't object, he only shivered a little at the unexpected gesture. After a while he even returned the hug, pulling Eren closer.
"I'm also sorry," Eren muttered, his face buried in Heichou's hair. "I shouldn't have said these awful things about you. You're not pathetic, you're amazing, you're my mentor, after all, right?" A little short laugh issued from Levi's mouth, right into the material of Eren's shirt.
"I probably look like a little ball of misery right now" Levi laughed and pulled away from Eren a little to wipe his eyes from tears. "I can't believe I got so emotional over you not accepting my apologies"
"Hey, I can hear you, you know?" Eren smiled. He glanced down at Levi. His eyes were a little puffy from crying, but he was smiling. And when he smiled, it seemed like everything would be fine. And that's how Eren felt. That everything was fine. "You look perfectly fine, corporal"
"Suck-up," Levi laughed. "What would you say if I... If I suggested us to go somewhere nice when we're out of here?"
"You know..." Eren grinned. "I have to think about this."
